County of Primorje and Gorski Kotar occupies 6.3% of the total area of the Republic of Croatia and contributing 6.9% to the total country population, it is the fifth largest county in the Republic of Croatia. It is located at the point of encounter of the northern Adriatic and mountainous southwest of Croatia where forest-covered expanses of Gorski Kotar border with Kvarner. On this territory nestled between Istra, the Republic of Slovenia and Lika, the millennia have left indelible marks of great Mediterranean and Central European cultures. Thanks to the sea, the littoral and the islands enjoy a mild climate throughout the year. The mountainous climate of Gorski Kotar harmoniously complements the Mediterranean qualities of Kvarner.
As a unit of local (regional) self-government, the County exercises independence in decisions on matters of local (regional) importance. The County seat, the City of Rijeka, is the largest Croatian port and the driving force of the county economy, as well as the cultural, university and healthcare center with a rich tradition of seafaring, shipbuilding and trade.
